How To Handle A Skunk In Your Yard

If you have a skunk in your yard, it can be a major nuisance. Skunks give off a foul odor that can be very hard to get rid of. If you have pets, the spray from a skunk can be very difficult to remove from their fur and may require a trip to a groomer or to the veterinarian office. Skunks may come into your yard because they are finding food there, or because they have a den in your yard and have babies nearby as well. If you have skunks in your yard, you need to get rid of them. Read on for helpful tips on how to handle this situation.

Leave It Alone

If you go near a skunk, it's sure to spray you. Skunks use their spray as a defense mechanism. If they feel threatened, or they feel that their babies are being threatened, they will use their spray to deter predators and to keep them away. You are a predator to a skunk, as are your pets. If you have skunks in your yard, stay as far away from them as you can. Skunks are usually seen at night, so keep an eye out at night and keep your pets away from their den (if you know where this is) during the daytime hours as well.

Remove Food Sources

The skunks are coming to your yard because you have food for them to eat somewhere, whether it's your trash or you have a compost pile, or you have a fruit tree or a vegetable garden. Get rid of the food source by putting a lid firmly in place on your garbage and sealing all of your trash in garbage bags that are tied up tightly. If you have a compost pile, keep it far away from your home, or keep it in a compost container instead of in a pile in your yard. If you have fruit trees, rake up the fallen fruit often, and if you have a vegetable garden, put a fence or some sort of wire fencing around it to keep skunks and other pests out of your yard.

Call A Pest Control Company

To get these pests out of your yard and to get rid of any of the babies in your yard as well, hire a pest control company to help you. A pest control specialist will be able to find these pests and can get rid of them properly without you or your family members, or your pets getting hurt in the process.

If you have a skunk or skunks in your yard, stay away and hire a pest control company to help you get rid of them.
